About Us

Big Thunder Nordic Ski Club was established in 1972 to promote and develop the sport of cross-country skiing at both recreational and competitive levels in Thunder Bay and the surrounding area. The Club is affiliated with Cross-Country Canada (CCC) and Cross-Country Ontario (CCO) and is one of the largest and most successful clubs within the Lake Superior Ski Division (LSSD). The Club proudly hosts many races and special events each year. Big Thunder offers a variety of programs and events and provides a great cross-country skiing experience for children and adults of all ages and abilities.

Big Thunder Nordic Ski Club has developed a number of high-calibre athletes over the years and is dedicated to continuing that fine tradition through its strong programs and excellent coaching. In fact, Big Thunder is one of the few clubs in Ontario to have a paid Head Coach who, together with a large group of highly motivated volunteer coaches, is dedicated to athlete development. This means its athletes enjoy the benefits of small group settings with more individualized attention. Through fees and fundraising activities, the Club is able to offer its racers NCCP certified coaching at levels 1, 2 and 3, comprehensive training programs, highly subsidized travel, wax support for all local and out-of-town races, as well as special discounts on equipment provided by local shops. Club athletes compete in local and area LSSD races, as well as provincial and national events. Some of the Club’s best have competed at the international level.

However, you don’t have to be highly competitive in order to reap the benefits of Big Thunder Nordic Ski Club. All of the Club’s programs are fun, friendly, and geared to the interests and abilities of those who participate. There’s something for everyone!
