Why XC?

Cross-country skiing (XC skiing) is described by medical professionals and exercise physiologists alike as the best cardiovascular fitness activity. XC skiing provides muscle toning for every major muscle group as well as helping to improve circulation and lower blood pressure. A 175-pound man skiing at a moderate pace can burn as many as 800 calories per hour, more than any other sport. It’s a low-risk, non-jarring exercise and an excellent way to develop a trim body while having fun.

The natural movements and low injury rates of XC skiing allow people of all ages and fitness levels to participate. Seniors can enjoy the rhythmic, low-impact feeling of gliding across gentle terrain well into their eighties. Whole families (even toddlers just learning to walk) can ski together while pulling the baby safely behind in a special sled called a “pulk”. It can be social or it can be solitary. Medical problems and poor fitness levels are rarely obstacles in participating in XC skiing. It is wise however, to check with your physician before trying any new fitness activity.

Beginners shouldn’t be intimidated by images of lycra-clad figures flying through the wilderness. XC skiing can be as easy as a pleasant glide through the forest, or it can be the hardest workout of your life. All you need is a pair of skis, poles, and boots with appropriate bindings and you’re on your way. Today’s XC skiing equipment is lightweight, easy to manoeuvre, looks and feels good, and makes learning the sport much easier. It’s a wise investment in what could become a lifetime passion.

All it takes is a desire to enjoy the great outdoors in winter. XC skiing is a lifetime sport that can help take a load off your mind, refresh your spirit, and strengthen your body.
